Pushing the Limits: County Athletes Smash Records at the Classic

Track and field athletes from around the county put on a real show at Woody Hayes Quaker Stadium in New Philadelphia Thursday night.

When all was said and done, seven new meet records were established at the annual Tuscarawas County Classic.

In three cases, breaking the old meet record wasn’t enough to win.

Take the girls’ 400 relay race for example.

Tusky Valley’s team of Tori Stahlman, Peyton Brothers, Leah Bourquin and Savannah Ashton turned in a time of 50.45, which bettered the record (50.72) set by last year’s Dover team.

It wasn’t enough to win, however, as Dover’s team of Ava Zobel, Bridget McCrate, Emmy Rodriguez and Lainie Keith ran 50.16 to win the race.

It also happened in the boys’ 110 hurdles. Indian Valley’s Carsen Hostetler broke a record of 14.78, but still finished second to Dover senior Daylen Clark, who ran 14.49.

“I think I got hit by my teammate’s trail, but it happens all the time in practice, so I’m used to it,” Clark said before his time was announced as a record. “Me and Carsen were right beside each other the whole race. It’s definitely super fun to have that competition. I knew we were going to push each other.

“It’s cool to have a title like this close to home, but I’m definitely shooting for a bigger stage this year, at regionals and state.”

Hostetler would go on to win the 300 hurdles, running a 37.74 to break the record of 39.10 that Clark had set last year.

In the 800 relay, Indian Valley’s team of Grady Kinsey, Owen Fockler, Kolton Smith and Cody Hickenbottom ran a 1:31.15, to break the New Philadelphia record of 1:31.37 set in 2021.

The Braves finished second in the race to the Tusky Valley team of Eli Miller, Marcus McNichols, Abe McElwee and Tilor Waltz, who posted a winning time of 130.84.

Dover’s Sydney Stevenson set a new record in the girls’ 800, running a time of 2:11.56 to break the former record of 2:16.09 set by Tusky Valley’s Hannah Wyler in 2022.

Dover’s 1600 relay team of Zobel, McCrate, Stevenson and Emilyn Feller ran a winning time of 4:07.67 to break a 2007 record (4:08.04) set by Indian Valley.

New Philadelphia’s Caleb Carlisle ran a meet-record time of 22.10 to break the record of 22.24 set by Tyvonne Harris of Claymont in 2003.

HOLDING STRONG: A number of meet records are building up longevity. On the girls’ side, Dover’s record still stands in the 3200 relay from 1994, while the oldest individual record belongs to New Philadelphia’s Brande Lamb, who won the high jump in 1992.

On the boys’ side, Newcomerstown’s Jamie Lewis set a record in the pole vault in 1995 that still stands. The granddaddy of all county records belongs to the New Philadelphia team that posted a winning, and still standing, record time of 8:05.94 in 1986.

HOW DID SHE DO IT? Indian Valley senior Laynee McDaniel jumped 10-6 into a steady breeze to win the girls’ pole vault.

Her technique?

“A head win is not your friend,” McDaniel said. “Especially when you’re timed like this and on a short time.

“This (event) is all in the end of your run, especially the last four steps. You need to get a good plant. Once you get your plant, you have to invert and get a good twist. It’s all one big motion.

UP NEXT: While there are a few dual meets still on the schedule, the next big one will be the IVC meet held May 15 at Newcomerstown. The Inter-Valley Conference takes in all of Tuscarawas County, except for Dover and New Philadelphia, as well as schools from Coshocton County, Stark County and Guernsey County.

District and regional tournaments will follow.
