Purple Power in the Winter and Spring

The University of Mount Union Purple Raiders are absolutely dominating this winter and beginning of spring season. The men’s and women’s swim and dive teams competed in the OAC Championship this past weekend and took home wins in many categories. Overall, the women’s swim and dive team won the OAC Championship, while the men’s swim and dive team took home second. Some standout swimmers taking home individual awards include Lucas Starling, Evan Kemp, Jacob Hathaway, Isabelle Parr, Abby Calaway, and Riley McCombs. Senior Jacob Hathaway even broke the school and OAC record in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:48.96. Head coach Eric Mojock and assistants Derek Currey and Nate Williams were named men’s coaching staff of the year and women’s coaching staff of the year. 

The men’s basketball team recently won the OAC regular season and are set to host the first round of the OAC tournament on Thursday, February 26th. Meanwhile, the women’s basketball team is set to host the first round of the OAC tournament Tuesday, February 24th. 

The men’s wrestling team has multiple wrestlers regionally ranked and one wrestler, junior Steven Marra, ranked #15 nationally. At the recent John Carroll Open, sophomore Aidan Carone had a standout day, which he placed fifth, becoming the first Mount Union wrestler to place at this tournament. The Raiders head to compete at the NCAA Regional Championship February 27th and 28th. 

The women’s wrestling team competed at the NCAA Regional Championship this past weekend and are excited to send freshman Abigail Mozden to NCAA Nationals in Coralville, Iowa March 6th and 7th.

With winter sports coming to a close, spring sports are on the rise. Baseball and both men’s and women’s lacrosse teams are off to a hot start. The baseball team starts their record off with five wins and one loss. Junior Drew Denham was named OAC hitter of the week. Denham is a transfer from the University of Akron and is leaving his mark on Raider Baseball already. Both men’s and women’s lacrosse started their season with a win for each team. The women’s lacrosse team dropped their second game of the season losing in a close 9-10 game against Kenyon. 

The Purple Raiders dominate in many sports. There are many opportunities to come out and support the Raiders. Be sure to check on schedules and support all of the Raider athletes and teams!

“I knew I was approaching the record, but at the end of the day, that’s not what this is about. It’s more about getting to the next week successful and healthy. Thankfully, we got both done tonight.”
