Make it 19 in a row.
Indian Valley improved to 3-0 on the season as the Braves won their 19th consecutive game with a 49-20 victory over the Roosevelt Roughriders in their home opener.
The Braves opened up their offense for the visitors from Washington, D.C., showcasing a solid ground attack as well as an explosive passing game.
The Roughriders loaded up the line of scrimmage, but senior tailback Grady Kinsey still rolled up 193 yards and three touchdowns.
In addition, junior quarterback Ryker Williams had three passing touchdowns and he ran for another.
Kinsey had the first score, a 2-yard run, on the Braves’ first possession, but with Roosevelt playing it close on defense, Williams dropped a 56-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Carsen Hostetler. A two-point pass opened the lead to 15-0.
“They were loading the box,” Williams said. “They had almost 11 guys within two yards of the line, so we took advantage of it.
“We practice a lot of pass plays, so even if you don’t see it, we’re ready.”
Late in the first half, Williams hit Colt James for a 49-yard touchdown that made the score 21-6. Indian Valley got a stop with less than a minute to play and Williams added a rushing score that put the hosts up 27-6 at halftime.
Kinsey had another short score, but Williams opened things up with a 51-yard scoring pass to Hostetler.
Kinsey put the icing on the cake with an 80-yard sprint up the left sideline that made the score 49-14 late in the fourth quarter.
Roosevelt quarterback Johnathan Strickland ran for one score and passed for another to lead the Roughrider offense and backup quarterback David Anderson completed a long scoring pass in the fourth quarter.
“They’re a good team,” Indian Valley coach Matt Lancaster said of the visitors. “They compete for the City championship every year.”
Indian Valley will have an early bye next week. Scheduled opponent Expression Prep, from Huntington, W.Va., has injury problems and won’t have enough players to compete.
"Every fighter is fueled by his past and whatever they’ve got going on. What got him to this point, I can’t tell you, but whatever it is, he uses it very well to do what he’s doing here.”
