The University of Mount Union Men’s Volleyball team is off to a strong start. The Purple Raiders started their season with a trip to California where they defeated the reigning National Champions in a reverse sweep. The Raiders are led by senior Camden Weeg and junior Michael Bowler. Starting the season by taking down a top team in the nation helps motivate this team to outwork and outplay their opponents; “I believe that proves to the other teams in the MCVL that we are coming for the championship and shows that we can compete at the highest level of D3 men’s volleyball,” said Weeg.
With almost a full team of returners and impressive additions to the team, the Raiders are bound to have a successful season. “The Raider fans should expect a more experienced and knowledgeable team than last year and a team that has more chemistry than ever before,” stated Weeg on what Raider fans should expect this season. With an experienced team, the Purple Raiders are eager to bring home an MCVL Championship; “I think we all have the same goal of winning the MCVL regular season and tournament, I feel beating the number three team was a great confidence boost proving we could beat any team when we play our game,” said Bowler.
Camden Weeg alongside Jack McClure, another standout Purple Raider, were named MCVL Players of the Week this past week. “I am grateful to be given this award and I am so truly honored. I feel this award is just the tip of the iceberg of what I can do for the team and help us win as many games as possible,” expressed Weeg. Weeg is currently leading the team in blocks, while McClure leads the team in kills with an impressive 121 kills in just nine games. Bowler follows close behind as he sits second in kills and third in blocks for the Raiders. Bowler was a MCVL Second Team award winner last season, and he “hopes to improve on that and ultimately make first team” this season. Success on the court cannot happen without all of the work that goes on behind the scenes, “I think the competitive environment we’ve created in the gym just pushes all of us to outperform each other leading to our team’s success,” said Bowler. Weeg stated that his work in the off season “has translated more than I could’ve ever imagined but I could not have done it without my team pushing me in the off season to get better.”
The Men’s Volleyball team has big goals of winning the MCVL and making it to the national tournament. The 2025 Mount Union Men’s Volleyball team has their next home games Tuesday, January 28th at 7p.m and Friday, January 31st at 7p.m in Timken Gymnasium. Be sure to come watch a game to support Weeg, Bowler, and the rest of the team!
“They watch tumbling, technique, tightness of the motions, facial expressions … it’s a complete circle of different things."
